About
Jordan’s Principle ensures First Nations Children in Canada Receive the health, education, and social services they need without delay, regardless of government funding disputes. Jordan’s Principle is named after Jordan River Anderson, a boy from Norway House Cree Nation who died in 2005 after spending his life in a hospital due to government disagreements over his care. The principle ensures immediate access to services, with funding disputes resolved later, addressing long standing inequalities faced by First Nations children.
Mission Statement:
Jordan’s Principle makes sure all First Nations Children living in Canada can access the products, services, and supports they need, when they need them.
Vision:
A future where all First Nations children have equal access to the support they need to thrive, free from barriers and delays.
Health Services:
Includes medical care, mental health support, dental care, and the provision of necessary medical equipment or supplies. For example, if a First Nations child requires medical equipment, and there’s a dispute over who should pay for it, Jordan’s Principle ensures the child receives the equipment immediately without waiting for a resolution.
Education:
Ensures that First Nations children have access to appropriate educational services, including special education needs or supports, that may not be available in their community.
Social Services:
Provides access to social services that may be needed for First Nations children, including child protection services, early childhood development programs, and services related to family or community care.
Cultural Supports:
Facilitates access to programs that help preserve and promote the child’s cultural heritage, including language programs and ceremonies.
Mental Health and Wellness:
Provides services for mental health, including counseling and therapeutic services, ensuring that children facing mental health challenges can receive support in a timely manner.
