About us

The Healthy Communities Approach:
EFFN Health Services actions consists of core values and building blocks on improving the determinants of health.

The Healthy Communities movement has its origins in Canada during the 1980’s. The movement became worldwide when the World Health Organization (WHO) initiated their “Healthy Cities Project” across Europe in 1986 (Hancock, 2009).

Since fiscal year 2016-2017 our health organization has used the Healthy Communities approach. The fundamental core value of the Healthy Communities Approach is capacity building and empowerment of Band Members.

Based on the WHO’s success factors for any healthy community initiative, the Healthy Communities Approach addresses multiple determinants of health (social, economic, environment, physical) and is based on five essential strategies or building blocks to build on our communities existing capacity to improve community health and wellness:

5 Key Building Blocks:

  1. Community Band Membership Engagement.
  2. Inter-Agency Networking.
  3. Chief & Council Support.
  4. Healthy Public Policy.
  5. Asset-Based Community Development.

By using the Healthy Communities Approach, we find that it simplifies innovation and creative solutions to community issues and support teamwork that addresses a wide range of community health challenges. Feedback from Band Members is vital, it is important to listen and respond to needs being identified. At the community level, we have a shared vision for a healthy future, it offers opportunities for Band Members to feel empowered and have a sense of leadership. Community Band Members voice their concerns.

  1. Evaluate.
  2. Define the issue.
  3. Generate solutions
  4. Action Plan
